US Crypto Sign-Up Bonuses and Referral Codes, State by State

Most offshore exchanges are closed to Americans, so the list of real crypto sign-up bonuses in the USA is short. Here is every program we reviewed that accepts US residents, what each one pays, which states are excluded and how the IRS treats the reward.

If you live in the United States, most of the crypto bonus headlines you see online do not apply to you. Binance.com, Bybit, KuCoin, MEXC, Bitget and nearly every futures exchange exclude US residents in their terms. What remains is a shorter list of regulated platforms that pay a free crypto sign-up bonus in the USA, usually $10 to $75 in real crypto, plus a set of hardware wallet and tax software discounts that work for American buyers.

The table at the top lists every program we have reviewed that accepts US residents, sorted by our scores. This page compares the exchange rewards side by side, lists the state exclusions that trip people up, explains why “no deposit, instant withdrawal” offers do not exist on the US side, and covers how the IRS treats your bonus.

Gemini is the cleanest US offer we have reviewed. You and your friend each get $50 in a crypto of your choice once you verify and trade at least $100 in your first 30 days. The reward is paid 32 days after sign-up, and Gemini says there is no time limit before you can sell it. The referrer’s total is capped at $1,500.

Crypto.com puts the US in its top Tier 1. You earn $5 at $100 of trading volume, $15 at $500, $25 at $1,000 and $75 at $5,000, within 30 days of KYC approval, capped at $75 per referral and paid in CRO. Stablecoin and stock trades do not count toward the volume. An extra $25 each is available for staking CRO or reserving a metal card with an annual Level Up Pro plan.

Kraken pays up to $20 USDG on its main app offer after a fiat deposit from a bank account and a minimum trade in non-stablecoin crypto within 15 days (30 days on the Kraken Pro offer). The Pro referral terms list the US except Maine, Washington and New York, and your friend must live in the same country.

Binance.US pays $10 to both sides once the friend passes Advanced Verification and buys or trades at least $100 of crypto within 30 days. There is no fee kickback for referred users. The $10 can be used to buy crypto straight away, but withdrawals are held for 30 days.

Coinbase runs two separate things. The referral bonus varies by country and is paid in crypto after the friend’s qualifying purchase. The US first-buy offer pays a random $10 to $2,000 in Bitcoin for a single purchase of $50 or more, and Coinbase states that 99% of users get $10 to $100. Using a referral link makes you ineligible for the Spin the Wheel and first-trade promo offers, so you have to pick one route.

Nexo switches to a US rulebook whenever either side is a US resident. Rewards come from three activities within 45 days of registration (adding funds, exchanging and borrowing), each worth $5 to $250 in NEXO depending on the tier, up to $600 per person. The lowest tier starts at $5,000.

State exclusions you need to check

Federal rules are only half the story. Crypto platforms need state licenses, and each one has a different map. Binance.US has the longest exclusion list among the programs we review: it is not available in Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Vermont, Washington or US territories, and Kansas and Wisconsin are limited to crypto-only accounts.

Kraken’s Pro referral offer excludes Maine, Washington and New York. Coinbase’s referral terms bar text-message invites to Washington State residents. New York is the state most often left out because of its separate BitLicense regime, so New Yorkers should read every program’s terms before signing up.

No deposit and instant withdrawal: the US reality

“Free crypto sign-up bonus no deposit instant withdrawal USA” is a common search, and the honest answer is that none of the US programs we reviewed fits it. Every US exchange bonus requires identity verification with your Social Security number, plus a purchase, a trade or a deposit. That is not a quirk of one platform. US anti-money-laundering rules and state licensing make anonymous, unconditional payouts close to impossible for a regulated exchange.

The withdrawal side has delays too. Gemini pays on day 32. Binance.US holds withdrawals for 30 days. Crypto.com credits CRO within 24 hours of each milestone, but the first milestone already needs $100 of volume. The lowest-cost path to a withdrawable reward is a $50 first purchase on Coinbase or $100 of trading on Gemini or Binance.US, and in each case you also keep the crypto you bought.

Our no-deposit bonuses page lists the few no-deposit rewards that exist globally. None of them are open to US residents. Any site promising Americans free withdrawable crypto for nothing should be treated as a scam; our guide to fake crypto bonuses shows the common patterns.

Which US bonus fits you

If you want the best ratio for a small buy: Gemini. $50 in crypto for $100 of trades is the highest return per dollar traded among the US programs we checked.

If you already trade regularly: Crypto.com’s ladder rewards volume, and $5,000 in 30 days unlocks the full $75 in CRO. Remember that the CRO moves with the market until you sell it.

If you live in Texas, New York or another excluded state: skip Binance.US. Gemini and Coinbase are the obvious alternatives. Kraken’s Pro offer excludes Maine, Washington and New York, so check the offer shown in your own account before you count on it.

If you only want to make one purchase: Coinbase’s first-buy offer needs a single $50 purchase. Just decide between it and the referral route before you register, since you cannot have both.

Beyond exchanges: US-friendly discounts

Several non-exchange programs in our reviews are open to US buyers and need no KYC. They are discounts on products, not free crypto, but they cost nothing extra if you were buying anyway.

For hardware wallets, Trezor gives 10% off a first Shop order of $49 or more, and Tangem gives 10% off with a typed code or 30% in total through its referral link. Ledger adds a $5 to $20 BTC gift card after a full-price order, which you can withdraw to your own Bitcoin address.

For taxes, which every US bonus hunter needs to think about, CoinTracker gives 20% off your first paid plan, CoinLedger takes 10% off DIY tax reports and Koinly gives account credit on a first plan. Our crypto tax software hub compares them.

How the IRS treats crypto sign-up bonuses

The IRS position is clear. Digital assets received as a reward or award are taxable income. You report the fair market value in US dollars on the day the reward lands in your account, as ordinary income. The digital asset question on the front of Form 1040 asks whether you received digital assets as a reward, award or payment. If you got a sign-up bonus, the honest answer is yes.

That value also becomes your cost basisThe amount you are treated as having paid for an asset. When you later sell, your gain or loss is the sale price minus this basis.. If Gemini pays you $50 of Bitcoin and you sell it later for $70, you have $50 of ordinary income when it arrives and a $20 capital gain when you sell.

Platforms may send you a Form 1099-MISC once your rewards pass their reporting threshold, and brokers report sales on Form 1099-DA. A missing form does not remove the obligation. Our guide to taxes on crypto referral rewards explains the details, including how the rules differ for heavy referrers who earn commissions as a side business. This is general information, not tax advice; talk to a tax professional about your own situation.

Before you sign up from the US

Have your Social Security number, a government ID and your bank details ready, since every US program asks for them. Read the KYC guide for crypto bonuses if you have not verified on an exchange before. Check your state against the exclusions above. Start the clock deliberately: Gemini’s 30 days start at sign-up, Crypto.com’s 30 days start at KYC approval and Coinbase’s 90 days start once you are trade eligible.

Then make the qualifying trade with non-stablecoin crypto. Kraken and Crypto.com both exclude stablecoin trades from their requirements. Finally, keep a simple log of the date, platform and dollar value of each reward. It takes a minute and saves a lot of guesswork at tax time. For a wider view of exchange programs, including those not open to the US, see the exchange referral comparison and the sign-up bonus ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Which crypto apps give a sign-up bonus in the USA?
Among the programs we reviewed, Gemini ($50 in crypto after $100 of trades), Crypto.com (up to $75 in CRO), Kraken (up to $20 USDG on the main offer), Binance.US ($10 after $100 in buys or trades) and Coinbase (a country-dependent referral bonus, or a separate first-buy offer) accept US residents. Nexo runs a separate US referral version paying $5 to $600 in NEXO.
Is there a free crypto sign-up bonus with no deposit in the USA?
Not among the US programs we checked. Every one requires identity verification plus a purchase, a trade or a deposit before paying. The lowest thresholds are Gemini and Binance.US at $100 of trading, and Coinbase's first-buy offer at a single $50 purchase.
Can I withdraw a US crypto sign-up bonus instantly?
No. Gemini pays its reward 32 days after sign-up, though it can be sold at once after that. Binance.US lets you use the $10 to buy crypto straight away but holds withdrawals for 30 days. Crypto.com credits CRO within 24 hours of each trading milestone.
Which states are excluded from crypto referral bonuses?
It depends on the platform. Binance.US is not available in Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Vermont, Washington and US territories, with Kansas and Wisconsin limited to crypto-only. Kraken's Pro referral offer excludes Maine, Washington and New York. Coinbase does not allow text-message invites to Washington State residents.
Can US residents use Binance, Bybit or KuCoin referral codes?
No. Binance.com, Bybit, KuCoin, MEXC, Bitget and most other offshore exchanges exclude US residents. Using a VPN to get around this breaks their terms and can lead to frozen funds. US residents should use Binance.US or the other US-accessible platforms instead.
Do I have to report a crypto sign-up bonus to the IRS?
Yes. The IRS treats digital assets received as a reward as ordinary income at fair market value on the day you receive them, and the Form 1040 digital asset question asks about rewards. Platforms such as Gemini may send a Form 1099-MISC once your rewards pass their reporting threshold, but you owe the tax either way.
