A crypto lending referral program looks irresistible at first glance. Where an exchange offers a few dollars in fee vouchers, a lending platform talks about “up to $2,500 per friend” or “a $500 welcome bonus”. The difference is that lending platforms make money from the assets you keep with them: they lend them out, charge interest on credit lines and earn spreads on conversions. So their rewards are tied to balance size and time, not to a single trade. A small deposit earns a small reward, and the big headline numbers only appear for very large accounts.
This hub compares the two lending programs we have reviewed in detail, Nexo and YouHodler, and explains the mechanics you will meet at other platforms too. The program table above is built from the same review data, so the numbers here match the individual pages.
How lending referral rewards are calculated
There are three common models. The first is a balance-based reward: you receive a percentage of the new user’s average balance over a set window. Nexo’s global and EEA programs use this. The second is an activity-based reward: fixed amounts for completing tasks such as adding funds, borrowing or exchanging. Nexo’s US program and YouHodler’s in-app tasks follow this pattern. The third is a share of the friend’s rewards: the inviter receives a cut of what the referred user earns over time. YouHodler pays 20% of the friend’s earnings in its Rewards program.
All three have something in common: they require real money on the platform for a real period. That is the core trade-off. You are not just signing up; you are agreeing to keep assets with a custodial lender long enough to qualify.
Nexo and YouHodler compared
| Detail | Nexo | YouHodler |
|---|---|---|
| Invitee reward | Half of 0.5% of 30-day balance | Up to $500, terms in-app |
| Inviter reward | Same NEXO amount as friend | 20% of friend’s Rewards earnings |
| Minimum to qualify | $5,000 added within 30 days | KYC; Rewards: $1,000 + $50,000 traded |
| Paid in | NEXO Tokens | Cash rewards; bonus funds in MultiHODL |
| US residents | Separate US program | Not served |
Nexo’s model is unusually transparent about its formula. Both sides split 0.5% of the friend’s average balance over 30 days, so each person receives 0.25% in NEXO Tokens, capped at $2,500. On a $5,000 balance, the minimum, that is about $12.50 each. On $20,000 it is about $50. The $2,500 cap only becomes relevant for a friend holding around a million dollars on the platform.
YouHodler’s headline “up to $500 welcome bonus” is harder to evaluate, because the platform publishes no public terms for it. The tasks and amounts appear inside your account after KYC. Older codes such as 15USDT have expired. The deposit bonus that YouHodler advertises separately is trading credit for MultiHODLMultiHODL is YouHodler's leveraged trading tool. You open a position worth several times your own money, and losses are magnified in the same way as gains., not money you can withdraw.
A worked example: what a referral is really worth
Imagine you move $10,000 of stablecoins to a lending platform to earn yield, and you use a referral code. Under Nexo’s global formula you would receive 0.25% of your average 30-day balance, about $25 in NEXO Tokens, provided you keep the full amount for the second 30-day window. Your friend receives the same.
Compare that with what can go wrong. If the price of NEXO falls 20% before you sell, your $25 becomes $20. If you withdraw part of the balance early, the average drops and so does the reward. And the $10,000 itself sits with a custodial company for at least two months. The referral is a nice extra on a decision you already made, never a reason to make it.
Other lending platforms and what to look for
Nexo and YouHodler are not the only names. Bitcoin-focused lenders such as Ledn, and the earn or loan sections of large exchanges, also run referral or welcome campaigns from time to time. Their terms change often, and we do not quote numbers we have not verified on a brand’s own pages. When you assess any of them, ask the same five questions.
First, what exactly is the trigger: sign-up, deposit, loan, or trading volume? Second, how long must the money stay? A 30-day hold is common, and some programs measure an average rather than a snapshot. Third, what asset is the reward paid in? A platform token is more volatile than USDC or Bitcoin. Fourth, is the reward withdrawable, or does it only work inside a product, like leveraged trading credit? Fifth, which countries are excluded? Lending is heavily regulated, and both programs we reviewed exclude large markets.
KYC and regional limits
Every lending program we reviewed requires full KYCKnow Your Customer: identity verification with an ID document and often a selfie, required by regulated financial companies before you can deposit or withdraw.. Nexo requires it for both the inviter and the friend. YouHodler needs a verified account for every deposit, withdrawal or exchange, and therefore for every bonus. If you prefer to avoid identity checks, lending platforms are not the right place to look for bonuses. Our guide to KYC for crypto bonuses explains what documents to expect and how to keep them safe.
Regions matter just as much. Nexo runs different rules for the US: if either person is a US resident, US rules apply to both, with fixed rewards from $5 to $600 for adding funds, exchanging and borrowing within 45 days. Some Nexo services are unavailable in certain jurisdictions. YouHodler does not serve the USA, Canada, China, India, Hungary and other countries, and UK residents can open accounts but receive no bonuses. If you are in the US, our hub of US crypto bonuses lists offers you can actually use.
Is a lending referral worth it?
For the right person, yes. If you already planned to keep $5,000 or more on Nexo, a referral link adds a small balance-based bonus at no extra cost. If you plan to take a crypto-backed loan or use MultiHODL on YouHodler and live in a supported country, opening an account through a code may unlock task bonuses you can see in the app. In both cases, the bonus is a modest extra on a product you already wanted.
For a beginner looking for a no-strings sign-up gift, lending platforms are the wrong category. The rewards scale with deposits and holding time, the KYC is strict, and the headline numbers describe ceilings that few users reach. Exchange welcome rewards, compared on our exchange referral codes hub, usually need far smaller deposits. And whatever you receive, check how your country taxes crypto referral rewards, since tokens credited for a referral are often treated as income when they arrive.
A final tip: read the platform’s own promotion terms rather than a code site’s summary. Lending offers change more often than exchange offers, and old “free Bitcoin” claims for Nexo, for example, no longer reflect a program that now pays in NEXO Tokens. Our guide on fake crypto bonuses shows how to spot “up to” headlines that hide a deposit lock.
