How to claim it, step by step
- Step 1
Open Gemini through the referral link
Create a new account from the link. Referral rewards apply only to new Gemini Exchange users who have never signed up before.
- Step 2
Verify your identity
Upload an ID to complete verification. Gemini states that unverified accounts are not eligible for referral rewards.
- Step 3
Pick your reward crypto
In the Rewards hub, choose which crypto you want the reward paid in. You can change this selection at any time before payout.
- Step 4
Trade at least $100 within 30 days
Instant buy, sell or convert, ActiveTrader, OTC and derivatives trades count. Deposits, withdrawals and stablecoin-to-stablecoin trades do not.
- Step 5
Wait for day 32
Gemini pays the Recruit reward 32 days after sign-up, and processing can take up to 2 more days. Track the status in the Rewards hub.
The Gemini referral program is refreshingly plain. There is no lottery wheel, no fee voucher and no tiered maze for new users. A friend shares a link, you sign up, verify your ID and trade at least $100 in your first 30 days. A little over a month later, both of you receive a flat reward in the crypto of your choice: $50 each in the United States.
What is less obvious is the timing, which trades count, and how the program changed. Gemini used to pay a share of trading fees to heavy traders through “Icon” and “Legend” tiers; those are closed to new referrals. This review uses Gemini’s own terms page and support article to explain the program as it works now.
- $50crypto reward each for US referrer and referee
- $100minimum trading volume within 30 days of sign-up
- Day 32when Gemini pays the reward after sign-up
- $1,500maximum total a referrer can earn at the Recruit tier
How the Gemini referral program works
Gemini calls the current structure the Recruit tier of its Referral Club. The new user must sign up through a referral link, complete account verification by uploading an ID and trade at least USD $100 (or EUR 100 or AUD 100) within 30 days of registration. Once the 30-day qualification period ends, both people receive the Recruit reward.
| Region (per Gemini’s terms) | Trade requirement | Referrer reward | Referee reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, Hong Kong, New Zealand | USD $100 in 30 days | USD $50 | USD $50 |
| Eligible EEA countries | EUR 100 in 30 days | EUR 20 | EUR 20 |
| Australia | AUD 100 in 30 days | AUD 50 | AUD 50 |
One inconsistency is worth knowing. Gemini’s support article lists only Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United States as eligible and describes the reward as “up to $50”, while the legal terms list fixed amounts plus the EEA and Australia. The practical test Gemini gives is simple: if you can see and interact with the Rewards section in your account, you are eligible. Check it before you count on a reward in Europe or Australia.
The reward is paid in the crypto you select in the Rewards hub. Pick Bitcoin and you get $50 worth of BTC at payout, pick Ether and you get ETH. You can change the selection at any time, and Gemini says there is no waiting period before you can sell what you receive.
What counts toward the $100 trade
Gemini counts “all revenue-generating trades”, which is broader than many exchanges allow. That includes:
- Instant buy, sell and convert orders in the main app
- ActiveTrader orders on the order book
- OTC trades
- Derivatives trades, in jurisdictions where they are offered
Excluded are crypto and fiat deposits and withdrawals, stablecoin-to-stablecoin trades and certain derivatives such as tokenized stocks. So a $100 buy of Bitcoin with dollars counts. Swapping $100 of one stablecoin into another does not. Buying a stablecoin with dollars is a fiat-to-stablecoin trade, which the terms do not list as excluded, but the safe move is to buy a non-stablecoin asset so there is no doubt.
When the Gemini referral reward arrives
This is where people get impatient. Gemini does not pay when you cross $100. It pays the Recruit reward 32 days after sign-up, after the 30-day qualification window has closed, and processing can take up to 2 more days. A “Pending” status in the Rewards hub during that period is normal and does not mean you failed.
Both accounts also need to be open, active and in good standing at payout time. If either the referrer or the referee is suspended, restricted or closed when day 32 arrives, the reward is not paid. Joint accounts, multi-user accounts and institutional accounts are excluded entirely; the program is for individual personal accounts only.
What the $50 is worth after Gemini’s fees
Gemini has two ways to trade. The main Gemini interface uses instant orders priced with a spreadA spread is the difference between the market price and the price you are quoted. It is a hidden cost included in the quote. plus a fee that depends on payment method, order size and other factors, all shown on the review screen before you confirm. ActiveTrader uses a published maker-taker schedule.
The ActiveTrader entry tier is expensive: 0.60% for makerA maker order rests on the order book until someone matches it, usually a limit order. A taker order fills immediately, usually a market order, and pays the higher fee. orders and 1.20% for taker orders below $10,000 of 30-day volume. Fees drop to 0.40% and 0.80% from $10,000, and 0.25% and 0.50% from $25,000.
| Trade within 30 days | ActiveTrader taker fee | Reward | Net after fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 of BTC | $1.20 | $50 | +$48.80 |
| $250 of BTC | $3.00 | $50 | +$47.00 |
| $1,000 of BTC | $12.00 | $50 | +$38.00 |
| $5,000 of BTC | $60.00 | $50 | -$10.00 |
The bonus comfortably covers the cost of the minimum trade. It does not make Gemini a cheap place to trade large amounts at the starting tier. If you plan to trade actively, place limit orders (maker) and read our guide to maker vs taker fees first.
Open Referral PageGemini credit card referral: a separate $50
Gemini also runs a referral program for its Mastercard credit card, available in the US. A referred friend who is approved for the card, activates it and makes at least one eligible purchase in the first billing cycle receives $50 in crypto. The referring cardholder receives $50 per eligible friend, up to 50 referrals per calendar year, plus a $250 bonus on the fifth successful referral within a rolling 12-month window. Rewards are credited in the first billing cycle after the requirements are met.
The two programs do not stack. Gemini says each referred person can qualify under either the credit card referral or the exchange referral, not both, and the first eligible referral by submission time wins. If you want the card anyway, the card route gives the same $50 without the $100 trade, but it involves a credit application. If you only want to buy crypto, the exchange referral is the simpler choice.
| Program | What the new user must do | New user gets | Referrer limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange referral | Verify ID, trade $100 in 30 days | $50 in crypto (US) | $1,500 total |
| Credit card referral | Get approved, activate, make a purchase | $50 in crypto | 50 referrals per year |
What happened to Icon and Legend tiers
Older Gemini referral guides describe a revenue share: 15% of trading fees for friends who traded $5,000 to $50,000 in their first 30 days (Icon) and 25% for $50,000 or more (Legend), split equally between referrer and referee for 12 months. That was the closest Gemini came to a fee kickback for new users.
Gemini discontinued those tiers for new referrals. Users who qualified before the change keep earning until their original 12-month period ends, but anyone joining now can only reach the Recruit tier. If a code page still promises “25% of fees back on Gemini”, it is quoting a closed program. Our explainer on referral kickbacks shows which exchanges still run ongoing fee sharing.
Who can use a Gemini referral code
Gemini’s referral rewards are for new Gemini Exchange users who have never signed up before, in jurisdictions where Gemini offers the program. US residents are explicitly eligible, which is why Gemini appears on our list of US crypto bonuses. Self-referrals, duplicate accounts and coordinated trading schemes are banned, and Gemini can withhold rewards where it suspects abuse.
Identity verification is a hard requirement, not a formality. Gemini states that unverified accounts are not eligible. If you are new to exchange onboarding, our KYC for crypto bonuses guide lists what to have ready.
Referral rewards may also be taxable income. Gemini notes that US users whose bonus and promotional income crosses its reporting threshold may receive Form 1099-MISC. See our guide to referral reward taxes.
Gemini vs other US exchange bonuses
| Exchange | New-user reward | Condition | Paid in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | $50 | $100 trade within 30 days | Crypto of your choice |
| Kraken | Up to $20 USDG | Fiat deposit + non-stablecoin buy in 15 days | USDG or local equivalent |
| Coinbase | Varies by country | Card or bank purchase within 90 days | Crypto or cash |
| Crypto.com | $5 to $75 | Trading milestones within 30 days | CRO |
On a $100 first trade, Gemini’s flat $50 is hard to beat among US-regulated platforms. Its weakness is fees afterwards, not the bonus itself. For the full category, see our exchange reviews.
Is a Gemini referral code worth it?
Yes, if you live in an eligible country and can wait a month. The conditions are easy (verify, trade $100), the reward is real crypto you can sell immediately, and Gemini publishes clear dated terms. Make sure the $100 comes from a non-stablecoin trade, keep both accounts in good standing until day 32, and do not mix it with a card referral. Then switch to limit orders for later trades so fees do not quietly eat what the bonus gave you.
What works
- Pays $50 in crypto to both people in the US, one of the larger flat referral bonuses among US-regulated exchanges.
- Only $100 of trading volume within 30 days is needed, and instant buys count.
- You choose the reward crypto in the Rewards hub, and Gemini says you can sell it right away.
- Gemini publishes a dated terms page with the current tier table and every past offer.
Watch out for
- The reward is paid 32 days after sign-up, not when you hit the $100 threshold.
- Stablecoin-to-stablecoin trades and deposits do not count toward the $100.
- The referrer's total is capped at $1,500, which equals 30 rewarded friends at $50.
- Joint, multi-user and institutional accounts are excluded from the program.
- Gemini's ActiveTrader starts at 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker fees, high for small accounts.
A Gemini referral code is one of the cleaner US sign-up deals: trade $100 within 30 days, wait until day 32, and both of you receive $50 in the crypto you chose. The catch is patience and fees, not hidden conditions. Gemini's entry-level trading fees are steep, so take the bonus and keep an eye on what each later trade costs.
