- Sign-up bonus
- Referral: a crypto or cash bonus that varies by country. US first-buy offer: random $10 to $2,000 in BTC for a single $50+ purchase (99% get $10 to $100).
- Fee discount (kickback)A kickback is the share of your own trading fees the platform hands back to you, usually for as long as the account exists.
- None on the standard referral. Coinbase One referrals give a 30-day trial plus $10 off the first paid month (US only).
- Referrer reward
- Inviter gets a bonus in crypto or local currency after the friend's qualifying purchase; amount varies by country and a cap on referrals may apply.
- KYCKnow Your Customer: identity verification with an ID document and often a selfie, required by regulated platforms before bonuses or withdrawals.
- Required. The 90-day window starts when you become trade eligible, which means after identity verification.
- Withdrawable?
- Standard referral and new-user rewards land as crypto in your balance. Pro-Affiliate partner bonuses on Coinbase Advanced carry a 10-year withdrawal hold.
- Availability
- US and many other countries; amounts vary. Do not send codes to the UK or Turkey. Advanced referrals exclude the UK, Turkey, the Philippines and Canada.
- How the bonus unlocksWhat you must do (deposit, trade a volume, hold funds) before the bonus becomes usable or withdrawable.
- Qualifying purchase by bank transfer, debit or credit card on coinbase.com/trade within 90 days of verifying identity. Advanced and Prime purchases do not count.
How to claim it, step by step
- Step 1
Open the invite link before creating an account
The account must be created directly from the referral link or code. Coinbase states the friend must not have created a Coinbase account before.
- Step 2
Verify your identity
Complete ID verification. Your 90-day window for the qualifying purchase starts when you become trade eligible, so there is no need to rush the buy on day one.
- Step 3
Add a bank account, debit or credit card
Only purchases paid by bank transfer, debit card or credit card qualify. Buying with a balance funded by crypto transfers does not.
- Step 4
Make the qualifying purchase on the standard Coinbase app
Buy any cryptocurrency through coinbase.com/trade or the main app. Purchases on Coinbase Advanced or Coinbase Prime do not count toward the referral.
- Step 5
Check your balance within 5 to 15 days
Coinbase says eligible referral payouts are made within 5 to 15 days. The bonus arrives as crypto or local currency, depending on your country.
The Coinbase sign up bonus is one of the most searched crypto offers, and also one of the most confusing. Coinbase does not run a single welcome deal. Its help center lists more than a dozen incentive programs: first-purchase rewards, a reward wheel, promo codes, a classic Coinbase referral code program, a Coinbase Advanced referral, Coinbase One invites and partner bonuses with very unusual withdrawal rules. Many of them exclude each other.
This page sorts them into what a new user can realistically get, using the amounts and odds Coinbase publishes itself. The short version: the big numbers are real but rare, and most people walk away with somewhere between a few dollars and a few dozen.
- 90 daysto make the qualifying purchase after identity verification
- 5–15 daysCoinbase's stated payout time for referral rewards
- 99%of US first-buy rewards fall between $10 and $100 in BTC
- $5–$50Coinbase Advanced referral reward by 14-day volume
The four Coinbase offers people confuse
When someone says “Coinbase promo code” or “Coinbase referral bonus”, they usually mean one of four different programs. You can only be in one of the first three.
| Offer | Who it is for | What you get | Key condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invite-a-friend referral | New users via a friend’s link | Crypto or cash, amount varies by country | Card or bank purchase in 90 days |
| First-buy reward (US) | New US users without a code | Random $10–$2,000 in BTC | Single first purchase of $50+ |
| New-user promo codes | New users with a campaign code | Amount shown at sign-up | Purchase or verification as stated |
| Coinbase Advanced referral | New Advanced traders | $5, $20 or $50 | Trading volume in first 14 days |
The exclusivity is written into the terms. Invitees who join through a referral link are “not eligible” for the Spin the Wheel incentive or the first-trade promo codes. The new-user trade promo code, in turn, is “not available to new users who were referred” through the referral program. So the real decision is which door you walk through, because you only get one.
How the Coinbase referral program works
The classic Coinbase referral program is straightforward. An existing user shares a link from the Invite Friends tab. You open it, create a new account and verify your identity. Then you make a minimum qualifying purchase using a bank transfer, debit card or credit card on the standard Coinbase app. Once that happens, Coinbase adds a bonus in crypto or local currency.
The details that matter:
- The qualifying purchase must happen within 90 days of becoming trade eligible, which Coinbase defines as verifying your identity.
- Purchases on Coinbase Advanced or Coinbase Prime do not count. Use the regular buy screen.
- Payouts are made within 5 to 15 days.
- The bonus amount varies by country, and a maximum number of rewarded referrals may apply to the inviter.
- Coinbase reviews new accounts for fraud and risk and can void the offer if it decides you are not eligible.
What Coinbase does not do is publish the referral amount on its help page. You see it in the invite and on the sign-up screen. That is the main transparency gap, and it is why third-party pages quote everything from $5 to $200. In Europe, Coinbase runs a separate EEA version with a 60-day window and an explicit rule that stablecoin purchases (USDT, USDC, DAI, PYUSD, EURC and others) and purchases from existing balances do not qualify.
The $50 first-buy reward: what the odds really say
For US users who sign up without a referral link, Coinbase has run a “New Users: Buy $50 Crypto, Get Bitcoin” offer. You create an account and make your first single purchase of $50 or more within the allowed time (up to one year, though Coinbase may set a shorter period). Then you claim a random Bitcoin reward.
Coinbase publishes the distribution, which is more honest than most promo pages that quote it:
| Offer | Reward range | What 99% receive | What 1% receive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy $50, get Bitcoin (US) | $10–$2,000 in BTC | $10–$100 | $1,000 or $2,000 |
| Spin the wheel | $3–$200 in BTC | $3–$10 | $100–$200 |
| Spin the wheel (minimum buy) | $30–$2,000 in BTC | $30–$100 | $1,000 or $2,000 |
| Decoder | $3–$200 in BTC | $3–$10 | $100 or $200 |
Two traps hide in the fine print of the $50 offer. A first purchase below $50 forfeits the reward entirely, and several smaller purchases that add up to $50 do not qualify. Make one purchase of at least $50 as your very first buy, or the offer is gone.
Coinbase promo codes for new users
Coinbase also uses campaign promo codes. One, the “new user trade promo code”, asks you to add a payment method and buy any crypto within 365 days of creating the account. The amount and type of crypto is displayed when you sign up and redeem the code, and the reward lands within 48 hours. Another, the “new customer sign up promo code”, gave eligible US residents $5 in BTC simply for creating and verifying an account.
Both are limited-time offers, both exclude anyone who arrived through a referral link, and neither counts purchases made on Coinbase Advanced. If a website shows a Coinbase promo code with a specific dollar amount, the only reliable check is the sign-up screen: Coinbase displays the value of a valid code before you commit.
What a small bonus is worth after Coinbase fees
The standard Coinbase app is convenient and expensive. Coinbase’s fee disclosure says simple buys include a spreadThe spread is the gap between the market price and the price you are quoted. It is a cost built into the quote rather than shown as a separate fee line. in the quoted price, plus a Coinbase fee that depends on payment method, order size and other factors. Simple limit orders carry a separate 1% execution fee, and Coinbase notes a Coinbase fee of 1.875% may also apply depending on the payment method. All of it shows on the preview screen before you confirm.
That changes the math on small rewards. Here is an illustration for a first $50 purchase using a combined cost of about 2.5% (Coinbase fee plus spread; your preview screen shows the exact figure):
| Reward outcome | Reward | Approx. cost of $50 buy | Net gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spin the wheel, typical | $3 | $1.25 | +$1.75 |
| First-buy offer, low end | $10 | $1.25 | +$8.75 |
| First-buy offer, high end of 99% | $100 | $1.25 | +$98.75 |
| Referral bonus | Varies by country | $1.25 | Check the invite |
The reward almost always covers the cost of one small purchase. The trouble starts afterwards, if you keep buying through the simple interface. Coinbase Advanced has no spread because you trade directly on the order book with maker and takerMaker orders rest on the order book and add liquidity; taker orders fill instantly and remove it. Exchanges usually charge takers more. fees. Our guide to maker vs taker fees shows how much that saves over a year.
Open Referral PageCoinbase Advanced referrals are a different program
Coinbase Advanced, the order-book trading interface, has its own referral. It does not care about a card purchase. It looks at the invitee’s trading volume (spot and perpetual futures where available) in the first 14 days after the first eligible trade.
| Volume in first 14 days | Reward to invitee |
|---|---|
| Over $100 up to $5,000 | $5 |
| Over $5,000 up to $10,000 | $20 |
| Over $10,000 | $50 |
The reward is credited within 24 hours after the 14-day period ends, and there is a limit of one reward per invitee. In the EEA, Australia, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, only spot volume counts. In Singapore, only perpetual futures volume counts. Advanced referral links are not valid for residents of the UK, Turkey, the Philippines or Canada, and joining this way rules you out of the Spin the Wheel, the standard referral and the first-trade promo code.
Is it worth it? Trading $10,000 in two weeks to get $50 only makes sense if you were going to trade that much anyway. At typical entry-level taker fees, that volume costs far more than $50 in fees.
The 10-year hold on partner bonuses
Coinbase’s incentive page also lists “Pro-Affiliate Community” bonuses for people referred to Coinbase Advanced through approved partner links: first-trade, trading-volume, deposit and identity-verification bonuses. The reward sizes are personalized and shown on the partner’s landing page. The fine print is unusual: the reward amount is subject to a ten-year holding period. You can trade with it and withdraw any profits, but you cannot withdraw, send or transfer the original reward amount for ten years. These bonuses are not available in the UK, Turkey, the Philippines, Japan or Canada, and they are credited roughly 45 days after you qualify.
If an influencer promises a large Coinbase Advanced bonus through a partner link, this is almost certainly the program behind it. It is closer to trading credit than cash.
Coinbase One referrals: a subscription discount
Coinbase One, the paid subscription with zero-fee trading on eligible trades, has its own referral program, available only in the US. A referred friend gets an extended 30-day free trial plus $10 off their first paid month. The member who referred them gets $10 off their next subscription payment per referral, up to $100 (rewards for 10 referrals). The credit only applies after the friend finishes the trial and pays for the first month.
That is a discount on a subscription, not a crypto reward. It is only worth chasing if you would subscribe anyway.
Who can use a Coinbase referral code
Coinbase is available in the US and many other countries, but the referral terms set limits. Referees and invitees may not be eligible “based on their country of residence”, and Coinbase tells users not to send codes to anyone in the United Kingdom or Turkey. Residents of Washington State cannot take part via text-message invites. Everyone must verify identity, and every account and payout goes through fraud and risk review.
For other exchanges that accept US customers with a sign-up reward, compare Kraken’s referral terms, Gemini’s $50 referral and our US crypto bonuses overview. Rewards from all of these can count as taxable income, and Coinbase notes it may report reward values on Form 1099-MISC. Read our guide to referral reward taxes before you treat a bonus as free money.
Which Coinbase offer should you choose?
| Your situation | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| US, first buy of $50 or more by card or bank | First-buy offer or a friend’s referral | Compare the invite amount with $10–$100 typical first-buy reward |
| Small first buy under $50 | Referral link | The $50 offer forfeits on a smaller first purchase |
| Active trader starting on Advanced | Advanced referral | Up to $50 if you already plan $10,000+ in volume |
| Already have an account | None | Every offer requires a brand-new account |
Whatever you choose, decide before you create the account. Coinbase does not let you add a referral code afterwards, and choosing one offer closes the others.
What works
- Coinbase publishes the reward odds for its first-buy offers, including that 99% of US users get $10 to $100 in BTC.
- The referral purchase window is long: 90 days after identity verification on the standard program.
- Rewards from the standard referral and first-buy offers arrive as crypto in your balance, not as fee vouchers.
- A separate Coinbase Advanced referral pays $5, $20 or $50 based on trading volume in the first 14 days.
Watch out for
- Coinbase does not publish the standard referral bonus amount; it only says the amount varies by country.
- Using a referral link makes you ineligible for the Spin the Wheel and first-trade promo code offers, so you must pick one.
- The '$2,000' headline is a 1% outcome. The typical reward on the US $50 first-buy offer is $10 to $100.
- Coinbase's simple buy includes a spread plus a Coinbase fee, which can eat a small bonus quickly.
- Pro-Affiliate partner bonuses for Coinbase Advanced cannot be withdrawn for 10 years.
A Coinbase referral code is worth using if you want the main Coinbase app and plan to make a first card or bank purchase anyway. Be realistic: the referral bonus is set by country and usually small, and the big numbers in Coinbase promos are lottery-style outcomes that 1% of users see. Compare it with the US first-buy offer before you sign up, because you cannot have both.
